Opal Property Group and Architects Lewis & Hickey Ltd in association with Nottingham Trent University are seeking ‘Expressions of Interest’ from artists and makers for a public artwork.
The Chettles Yard development is a mixed use development of residential (to house 1000 + students), light industrial units, retail unites and a large trade warehouse.
The prominences of the building frontage allows for an opportunity for attraction and interaction with the buildings which will draw people onto the site.
The development is located in Radford, west of Nottingham city centre and faces onto Wollaton Road (A609) and St Peters Road and boarders with the River Leen and a railway line. The corner plot is the gateway to Chettles Yard and this is the proposed site for a public piece of art which will act as a means of navigation and create a focal point within the site.
The scheme is seeking ‘Expressions of Interest’ from artists and makers who have either graduated from Nottingham Trent University, or are an artist resident within the City of Nottingham or the East Midlands region.
The Commission The commission is for the production of a public artwork which should be innovative and unique. The nature of the work should integrate and sympathise with the site, but should recognise the mixed development and therefore its users, whilst also challenging the viewer’s perspective of public art.
The commission is to create a low maintenance and robust public artwork that is integrated into the line of the buildings and landscaping. The available budget is up to a maximum of £12,000 and includes all costs associated to produce the public artwork including artist fee, research, design, engineering, production, transport, expenses and insurance costs. Planning application and costs plus the costs of installation will be met by Opal Property Group. The selected artist will also be required to deliver outreach work including workshops and lectures. This is included within the fee.
A professional artist with experience in public commissions will be selected to act as a mentor for the commission.
